Gay and Lesbian Switchboard is now actively promoting its services to Tasmania's queer communities. 

Using our 1800 184 527 freecall number, Tasmanian callers are able to speak with one of our trained volunteer counsellors. 

Part of the effort in ensuring Switchboard can provide this much needed service to Tasmanian callers involves working in partnership with local groups to both promote our service and collect information on Tasmanian organisations, services and businesses. This enables our counsellors to offer appropriate information and referrals as well as peer-based counselling. 

We have been very enthused by our recent meetings with Tasmanian groups and services and feel our partnerships will make a real difference to the lives of Tasmanian GLBTI callers. A number of Tasmanian services, organisations and businesses are listed in our community directory. Tasmanian groups, services and organisations are encouraged to contact us to be listed on our database, receive promotional material or meet with a Switchboard representative.

TASMANIAN GAY COMMUNITY APPLAUDS LOCAL LIBERAL MP

summary:  Tasmanian gay rights activists have paid tribute to long-serving Tasmanian Liberal MP Sue Napier following an announcement she will retire from state politics.
text:  Napier served in the Tasmanian House of Assembly as member for the Division of Bass, in the state’s north-east, for 18 years. She will stand down due to the return of breast cancer with which she was first diagnosed in 2008.

A new position vacant in Man2Man program

summary:  TasCAHRD is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic individual to work with our energetic and professional team. As part of our Man2Man Program you would be responsible for coordinating and monitoring content for the program website and publication as well as providing health promotion information to gay men and other men who have sex with men. This includes the provision of on-line contact within peer-oriented websites, phone contact and limited face-to-face support.

TCA says sorry to LGBTI community

summary:  Timber Communities Australia (TCA) has apologised for discriminatory ads they ran in the 2007 federal election campaign.
text:  At a joint media event, Timber Communities Australia (TCA) Tasmanian State Manager Barry Chipman handed over letters of apology to Martine Delaney and Peter Power.
text 2:  Delaney and Power complained to the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner over the television ads. The ad attacked Greens' policies relating to same-sex marriage and the legal recognition of intersex people - using poison symbols, danger signs and audio effects to describe these policies as extremely dangerous.

Tasmania approves same-sex family law

summary:  Tasmanian families headed by same-sex couples have been given protections equal to those of families headed by heterosexual couples
text:  The Tasmanian Legislative Council last week ratified a Tasmanian Government initiative which will see the same-sex partner of a woman who has a child through fertility treatment regarded as the child’s other legal parent.

Long wait in gay blood case

Tassie voted gay friendly

summary:  TASMANIA has become the only Australian state or territory to make a list of gay-friendly holiday destinations.
text:  In just one decade the state has gone from being one of the least tolerant to one of the most accepting of gays and lesbians, leading travel site Hotel Travel Club says. The state recently claimed second spot in a list of the world's top-10 emerging gay destinations.

Working it Out -Youth Poster

summary:  A new poster and postcard campaign aimed at Tasmania's LGBTI you was launched on the 4th of Dec.
text:  Susan Ditter (Exec Officer WIO): "WIO works in schools with teachers and students raising awareness, working to prevent and address issues of bullying and discrimination based on sexuality or gender, providing training to young people to be public speakers so they can share their life experiences as same sex attracted young people with their peers.“It will be delivered to Tasmanian school principals accompanied by a letter from the Allsorts group explaining the importance of the poster to acknowledge that the school respects and honors diversity."

New Man2Man website

summary:  MAN2MAN is the new quarterly magazine produced by the MAN2MAN Program (formerly Gay Men’s Health Program) at TasCAHRD.
text:  MAN2MAN is a health & lifestyle resource for men in2 men with its first issue released in November 2008. The magazine has been widely distributed state-wide to all of the usual GLBTI venues and organisations, in addition to gay friendly cafes & businesses, community health centres, state libraries, bars & nightclubs, backpackers, hairdressers, laundromats, coffee shops, arts & cultural venues, as well as having web links from other websites. We currently distribute 3000 hard copies statewide and due to the magazines popularity have recently launched a standalone website MAN2MAN Online for the magazine

Paws at Mole Creek

summary:  The 2010 Paws at Mole Creek Dog Day Out will be bigger and better than last year, with more entertainment for all. Our fun and, let's face it, rather silly competitions will be back, with maybe some new classes added, together with the obstacle course which was hugely popular.

New recognition for gay marriage vows

summary:  Same-sex couples in Tasmania will soon be able to make their relationship ceremonies official.
text:  Couples have been able to formalise their relationships since 2003 by signing a deed at the registry of births, deaths and marriages.
text 2:  But from November the first, an administrative change means marriage celebrants can preside over the ceremony and formalise the relationship deed.

Tassie Catholic schools take step back

summary:  The Apple Isle risks taking a backward step as religious schools try to make discrimination against students legal.
text:  Gay activists in Tasmania have labelled a recent proposal by the Catholic Church to gain an exemption from the Anti-Discrimination Act as a “Bigot’s Charter”. Rodney Croome, advocate for the GLBTIQ community, said the exemption has the potential to be abused and called for an investigation into the Catholic school system which by admission is already discriminating against non-Catholic students.

TGLRG calls for education funding

summary:  Following reports of a gay Hobart couple suffering harassment, the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group (TGLRG) has called for greater funding to tackle homophobia.
text:  According to the Hobart Mercury, Chilean couple Juan and Pedro have suffered homophobic abuse from their neighbours to such an extent that authorities have placed them higher up the public housing list so they can be moved to a safer area.

Gay couple lives in lockdown

summary:  Every night, a Hobart couple closes the curtains, deadlocks the door, turns all the lights out and bunkers down.

Tasmania Launches Social Inclusion Strategy

summary:  Tasmania has launched its first Social Inclusion Strategy today, however local gay rights activists say the directive does not advance practical measures for change.

summary:  The 2009 Rainbow Awards presented by The League of Gentlefellows was an enormous success. Recipients included Senator Bob Brown and Paul Thomas, Brian Morris from TasCAHRD, Julian Punch, Outright Youth and Gay & Lesbian Switchboard.
